Denim. According to Webster’s dictionary, denim is defined as a “strong usually blue cotton cloth that is used especially to make jeans.” Skinny jeans, boyfriend jeans, flared jeans, jean jackets, jean shorts, denim skirts, jean shirts, and so on. It would be hard to imagine the world without denim or our favorite pair of jeans (you know ladies that pair you have in your dresser that’s your go to and make you feel confident and have people staring).
When I was thinking of a post to write I wanted to put away my camera and focus on some fashion history because after all, fashion history is my favorite kind of history. I thought there had to be something cool that happened today and thanks to Google I learned that on this day, June 6, 1850 fashion designer Levi Strauss made his first pair of blue jeans. It’s mind blowing to learn that blue jeans have been around for over 150 years.
Not only is Levi Strauss responsible for the birth of blue jeans, he also founded Levi Strauss & Co., the first company to manufacture blue jeans. Over the years Levi Strauss & Co. has become one of the most popular denim brands. I couldn’t imagine walking into my favorite clothing store and not seeing a huge selection of denim products or going through my wardrobe and not styling outfits around my favorite pair of jeans. Levi Strauss took a risk and put his creativity to good use by creating an item that will probably continue to be worn for centuries to come.
Throughout this post, I have included a collage of my favorite denim pieces. Make sure to take a look at all my picks for a little denim inspiration. Next time you slip into your favorite pair of jeans make sure to thank Levi Strauss for making denim a thing that completely transformed the fashion world.
