It’s been a whirlwind of a weekend, and I guess that explains the dark circles under my eyes, a tired and achy body, and a sore throat. This weekend was not just any weekend; it was parents and alumni weekend at my university. Although, my roommates and I don’t live far from campus, we still wanted our parents to come up to participate in the family weekend activities. We decided to host a “party” for our moms, so they can get a taste of our college life.
This is a different kind of post. I’ve never done a weekend recap post, so keep reading to experience a crazy, yet fun weekend.
Friday night was a usual night of hanging out with my friends, getting dolled up and going to a few parties. On Friday, or should I say Saturday, I got back to my room at 3 a.m. I only got a few hours of sleep and then it was time to entertain our moms. The roommates, Christina, Jennie, and Annie (shout out to you three, not only the best roommates but also my best friends) woke up early to clean our house. Vacuuming, swiffering, dusting, all that jazz, to make our place spotless for the moms. The work continued with preparing food and drinks to fuel our minds and bodies for the day ahead. Shout out to Christina and Jennie’s delicious homemade guacamole and hummus. It was a hit!
Finally, we heard a knock on the door. The party can now start! Our moms were excited to spend time with us and bond with the other mothers. Our party was a hit. Lots of conversations and laughter all around. But the party didn’t stop there. The real reason we invited our moms was to attend our university concert, featuring The Temptations Review and Matt and Kim.
For those who don’t know, I am a big fan of music. There’s always music playing in our townhouse and I like to have some background music when I am doing homework or writing a blog.
When I first heard that The Temptations were coming to campus, I was so confused because why would college students want to listen to an “oldies” band. However, hearing Dennis Edwards, one of the original Temptations, and his back-up singers, I found myself swaying to the R&B and soul music. Our moms knew all the songs by The Temptations, so they were teaching us about the band, their music, and their generation. Throughout the concert, my roommates and our mothers were huddled in a circle singing to all their favorite songs; we especially went nuts when the band played My Girl. My university planned it right, making the first part of the concert more for the parents and the second part featuring more of a contemporary genre.
The next act featured Matt and Kim an American indie dance duo from Brooklyn, NY. Since 2004, the duo has been rocking out on their drums, keyboards, and hitting all those high notes. My favorite songs include Daylight and Get It, so I was so happy when they played them on Saturday. The amount of energy around at the concert was awesome, not to mention all the confetti and balloons, making the concert a real party scene. I am really starting to enjoy the indie music scene and I love how these up and coming artists produce such upbeat and energy-filled tunes.
That’s a wrap! What a weekend. Who knows what next weekend will bring, considering its Halloween. Let the Halloweekend festivities begin!
